Production of Terrestrial Gamma?Ray Flashes During the Early Stages of Lightning Flashes

چکیده

Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) are short emissions of high energy photons associated with thunderstorms. It has been known since the discovery TGFs that they lightning, and several case studies have shown produced at initial phase lightning flash. However, it not tested whether this is true in general. By using largest TGF sample up to date, combined ground-based radio detection data, we perform a statistical study test this. One missions Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) consisting innovative combination X- gamma-ray detectors, optical photometers cameras. This allows us investigate temporal relation between gamma-rays by signal discharges. Based on stacking analysis measurements activity, together resolution from ASIM photometers, beginning flashes. In addition, for significant fraction TGFs, activity detected enhanced an interval 150 750 ms following co-located TGFs. The evident randomly selected indicates characteristic property flashes start TGF.

Properties of the thundercloud discharges responsible for terrestrial gammaray flashes

[1] The source of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) has been an active area of research since their discovery by Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory/Burst and Transient Source Experiment in 1994. These intense bursts of gamma rays originate within thunderclouds via the rapid production of relativistic runaway electrons, accelerated by thundercloud/lightning electric fields to multi-MeV energies. R...

Lightning leader altitude progression in terrestrial gamma-ray flashes

Radio emissions continue to provide insight into the production of terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) by thunderstorms, including the critical question of the conditions under which they are generated. We have identified several TGF-associated lightning radio emissions in which the altitudes of in-cloud lightning leader pulses that precede and follow the TGF can be measured. We combine these ...

NO signatures from lightning flashes

In situ measurements of cloud properties, NO, and other trace gases were made in active thunderstorms by two research aircraft. Concurrent measurements from a three-dimensional (3-D) VHF interferometer and the 2-D National Lightning Detection Network were used to determine lightning frequency and location. The CHILL Doppler radar and the NOAA-WP-3D Orion X band Dopper radar were also used to me...

Production of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes by an electromagnetic pulse from a lightning return stroke

[1] Recent observations of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) (Smith et al., 2005) suggest the need for a new mechanism of TGF production. Consideration of relativistic runaway electron (RRE) avalanche driven by electromagnetic impulses (EMP) radiated by rapidly moving lightning return strokes indicates that TGFs can be produced by discharges with peak return stroke currents Ip > 450–700 kA w...

Measurements and implications of the relationship between lightning and terrestrial gamma ray flashes

[1] We report observations and analysis of 30 kHz radio emissions (sferics) from lightning discharges associated with 26 terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) recorded by the RHESSI satellite over the Caribbean and Americas, between 1500 and 4000 km away from the magnetic field sensors located at Duke University. Thirteen of the TGFs are found to occur within 3/+1 ms of lightning discharges of p...
